Our Eco-House
The Mill Group working with housing providers has produced a series of unique and innovative films aimed at helping people to save energy and money. In the first set of films, housing group Places for People and The Mill Group have re-created familiar scenes around the home to highlight a variety of possible savings in an entertaining and user-friendly way for DVD or online usage.
Nicholas Doyle, Director of Sustainability at Places for People comments: “We wanted to find a way to capture the attention of our 150,000 customers and educate them about the ways they can save energy, explaining why it’s important and the benefits it will bring, without talking down to them or making them feel guilty.
“The simplicity of the message, filmed room-by-room around a typical house and lasting less than a minute in each room, draws inspiration from the close-up filming techniques used on Peep Show and we are already receiving very positive feedback.
“By clicking on the various rooms around the house on our website, viewers learn the benefits gained from insulating walls or lofts or from using energy-saving light bulbs and devices and a second click in any area allows customers to place orders for home insulation, energy monitors, power-downs, water-saving devices and all sorts of other free equipment that will help them save hundreds of pounds a year”.
The Mill Group’s Managing Director, James Titterington, who jointly devised and directed the filming adds: “By taking a humourous approach to a serious issue we have allowed people to identify with a householder engaged in everyday living around the home; it’s a win-win situation and through light-hearted, entertaining filming we have opened up the possibility to make huge personal savings for residents whilst helping towards government targets; housing alone is currently responsible for generating over 30% of total UK carbon emissions.
“The films have been widely welcomed and a number of HAs are looking to use them; the films are now available to all housing providers in both online and DVD formats. Sharing best practice, partnership working and value-for-money are TSA cornerstones and the housing savings’ potential nationwide is enormous; and all at a time when sustainability and rising living costs are increasingly on people’s minds”.
