What do men really want?

...a fairly provocative question!?...but one nevertheless designed to tackle the serious issue of improving men’s health in North Lancashire. A Mill Group ‘Comments Campervan’, commissioned by NHS North Lancashire, boldly displaying this question, set out to visit eight regional locations including council sites, a recycling plant, a builders’ merchants, a farmers’ auction and a dockyard, to seek out the health views of men in the statistically vulnerable age group of 40-60.

Over 120 men in this often hard-to-reach group stepped on board to be filmed answering firstly a basic question: ‘What makes you feel healthy?’. Following this our researchers posed the wider question: ‘What do you think are the three most important things you could do to improve your health?’...and then went on to break these answers down into the specific ways that this might be achieved: ‘Do you access: gyms/sports’ centres?: stop-smoking services?: seek alcohol or weight management advice?: read information about what is, or isn’t healthy?’.

Information and advice can come from a variety of sources such as the Internet, friends and family, or from general media sources. Our researchers then identified individual preferences, and where appropriate especially probed for the reasons why this group is often the least likely to visit their GP. NHS organisations increasingly value the benefit of audio-visual recording for providing a useful naturalistic record that also captures visual expression and non-verbal behaviour. Replayed, analysed and presented later, our ‘Comments Range’ of film studios offer a private ‘neutral’ place to conduct interviews and allow for a refinement of future NHS policies and services. Sophy Stewart, Head of Communications for NHS North Lancashire comments: “The venues I have spoken to so far have given me some very positive feedback about the team that conducted the interviews.

One venue in particular has asked me to communicate how delighted they were at the professionalism of the team, saying they had gone ‘above and beyond’ during their visit, staying beyond their scheduled time, as there were so many workers wanting to talk to them”.
